Carol (Mother Elizabeth) Bacha, as her name shows on the ballot, is many things.
She's a licensed practical nurse who cares for the sick, injured and disabled. She's a medical ethnomusicologist, which is a relatively new field of holistic research and applied practice that integrates music, health and healing. She's been a nun in the Russian Orthodox Church since November 2015, and she's been in Palm Coast since December 2014 with the mission of developing a school/monastery within the jurisdiction of the church.
And she's running for District 3's seat on the Flagler County School Board.
"I consider myself a natural advocate," Bacha said.
When she first arrived in Palm Coast, she enjoyed swimming at the Belle Terre Swim and Racket Club. There was talk of it being closed down to adult activities, so she had to make her voice heard.
"That was my first initiation into attending those kinds of meetings," she said. "People kind of remembered me as the voice to the School Board at that point."
With her background in medical education and innovation, she hopes to be involved with the University of North Florida MedNex, the nation's "first comprehensive, university-based medical nexus," which will be at Palm Coast's Town Center.
