Thanks to the scent taken from a pillowcase and the keen nose of K-9 Holmes, a 13-year-old child with disabilities was returned safely home on June 26.
At 11:41 a.m. June 26, the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office was alerted that a 13-year-old child with disabilities had run away from his home on Fordham Lane in Palm Coast. FCSO deputies along with Sgt. Gimbel and his K-9 partner, Holmes, responded to the area to conduct a search for the missing child. Flagler County’s Emergency Fire Flight helicopter also responded.
A pillowcase was retrieved from the child’s bedroom as a scent article and K-9 Holmes was able to track the child’s scent through the woods. The child was safely located at 12:57 p.m. in the woods just south of Frontier Drive. Fire Rescue responded and assessed the child and found him to be in good health. He was returned to his home and into the custody of his caregiver.
“We’re so glad that K-9 Holmes did such a great job in locating this boy and bringing him home safely and quickly,” Sheriff Rick Staly said. “It is very hot outside, and we are glad that the boy was not exposed to the elements for very long. About an hour after a call was received, he was found safe. This case highlights exactly why we added a bloodhound to our K-9 Unit. Congratulations Holmes and his handler Sgt. Gimbel.”
