A 26-year-old woman is dead after a shooting near Ormond Beach early on Saturday, June 27, and Volusia County Sheriff's detectives are currently investigating the incident.
Deputies responded to 1869 Fairland Road off North Tymber Creek Road just before 3 a.m, and the victim, identified as Ashleigh Murphy, had a gunshot wound to the upper body, according to VCSO. Murphy, who lived at the address of the incident, was transported to Halifax Health Medical Center, where she was later pronounced dead.
The shooter, whose name VCSO has not yet released, was also the one who called law enforcement. He reported that the shooting was accidental, and VCSO reports he has been cooperating with detectives.
