Matanzas' boys wrestling team placed second at the 2A-Region 1 tournament on Saturday, Feb. 29, at Chiles High School in Tallahassee. The Pirates qualified five wrestlers for the state tournament — held March 5-6 at Silver Spurs Arena in Kissimmee.
In the 126-pound weight class, Shaun Culbreth (49-5) made it to the title match, where he lost to Fort Walton Beach's Weston Burbidge. Culbreth reached the finals with an 8-7 semifinal win over Leon's Nolan Zirgibel, the champion of District 2. In the 145-pound weight class, Griffin Wilder (25-7) reached the final with a 4-2 win over Mosley's Logan Gall. Wilder was defeated by Orange Park's Cameron Broughton. In the 152-pound weight class, Noel Alicea (27-13) lost in the final to Fletcher's Joel Rodriguez. In the 170-pound weight class, Quenteen Robinson (38-3) defeated pinned Westside's Angelo Philpot for his second state appearance and second region title. Finally, in the 285-pound weight class, Robert Elder won three times on the back to qualify for states.
Flagler Palm Coast's boys wrestling team finished in fourth place at the 3A-Region 1 tournament on Saturday at Fleming Island High School. The Bulldogs qualified four wrestlers for the state tournament.
In the 132-pound weight class, Andrew Dance (41-10) lost in the 14-7 in the semifinal to Fleming Island's Isaac Padgett. In the 138-pound weight class, Kyle Peacock (41-6) reached the final with a 9-6 victory over Lake Brantley's Chris Labrecque. However, he was defeated by Apopka's Ransom Randolph. In the 145-pound weight class, Blane DeFord (49-6) made it to the title match, where he lost to Fleming Island's Gannon Janssen. DeFord had three pins on the day, including in his semifinal victory over Hagerty's Blake Watts. Finally, in the 285-pound weight class, after falling in the quarters, Anthony Cinelli (33-6) won four times on the back for third.
The Imagine Spirit Team competed in its first competition of the season at the Daytona Dazzler Cheer Competition on Feb. 29, with 37 cheerleaders from Flagler County in grades second to ninth. The recreational cheer team received the Most Spirit award, first place in Junior Rec, second place in Youth Rec, and the Junior Rec squad had the second overall highest score in the competition.
