One motorcyclist died in Ormond Beach early Sunday morning during a head-on crash with a pickup truck, Ormond Beach Police reported — and during the crash investigation, a second vehicle struck a police cruiser with the officer inside.
Around 1:39 a.m. on March 8, police officers responded to the scene in the 100 block of Ocean Shore Boulevard, according to a press release. The motorcyclist, Patrick Gilman of Hampton, Connecticut, died at the scene. The officer in the police cruiser had been positioned to block traffic when he was subsequently struck. He was taken to the hospital to be checked out, the press release stated.
The driver of the pickup truck was also taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and released a few hours later.
OBPD reported that investigators believe Gilman was traveling northbound on Ocean Shore Boulevard when he crossed over to the southbound lane to pass a vehicle and into the path of the pickup truck.
