Melissa Burt DeVriese has been named president of Security First, of Ormond Beach, making her the only female president of a homeowner’s insurance company in Florida, according to a press release from the company.
The board of directors also approved Locke Burt as chairman and chief executive officer. Burt will oversee quality assurance, special investigations, fraud prevention and accounting, while DeVriese will head up all other departments. Previously, Burt was both CEO and president and DeVriese was chief administrative officer and legal counsel.
“Serving as president, Melissa will continue to create a solid business strategy, maintain transparency of company objectives and goals and evolve the organization to build a collaborative, supportive culture,” said Marissa Buckley, vice president of marketing and brand experience. “It's an honor to celebrate this historical moment … and to be part of the continuation of a family legacy in insurance of more than 100 years.”
The Burt family has been in the insurance business in Ormond Beach since 1959, when Locke Burt’s parents started an agency.
The release said Burt, who served as state senator from 1991 to 2002, will continue to work toward insurance law reform.
Security First moved into the first building constructed in Ormond Crossings, a planned commercial/residential community, last November. Previously, some employees were located in Holly Hill, but now all are located in one location, making Security First the largest employer in the city. The company currently has 430 employees.
