All beach restrooms and shower facilities at inlet parks, coastal parks and parking lots will be reopened in time for Mother's Day.
Volusia County Council Chair Ed Kelley made the announcement during the county's 2 p.m. briefing on Wednesday, May 6. The facilities will reopen on Saturday, May 9. Kelley said the reason the county waited to reopen restrooms is because these facilities see a lot of traffic and their surfaces are frequently touched by different people. The county will implement porter services to ensure the facilities are cleaned often.
As for reopening ramps to beach driving — with the exception of the three ramps currently opened for ADA access only at 3rd Avenue, Williams Avenue and Dunlawton Boulevard — Kelley said the county wants to make sure it "gets it right."
“It’s the birthplace of speed," Kelley said. "It’s the home of racing. It’s what made us Daytona Beach and this area famous, so opening up the beach to vehicles is being considered for our next phase of access.”
The county is currently working on parking protocols to help maintain social distancing regarding beach driving. In late April, the county announced plans to place temporary markers spaced between existing conservation poles on the beach to designate where cars will be able to park.
The County Council also received a draft of the Relaunch Volusia Plan on Tuesday, May 5, which outlines reopening efforts in the county, Kelley said. It will be discussed at the County Council meeting on May 12.
“We’re currently reviewing that plan," Kelley said. "It’s a large, detailed document, and we want to ensure it’s just right.”
