Ormond Beach City Commissioner Zone 2
On the Fourth of July, we as Americans celebrate our nation’s birthday with apple pie, backyard barbecues, water activities and of course fireworks.
Ormond Beach is known for its incredible fireworks show, and that show has been going on with the same fireworks vendor since I was a little boy in this city. What we are currently experiencing with COVID-19, as a nation and a city, has never happened before. Gov. DeSantis has issued that the social distancing guidelines continue until July 7 so that we can help protect our most vulnerable residents. I, for one, am disappointed that we had to postpone our annual Fourth of July celebration that we have at the four corners of the Granada Bridge.
I believe the fireworks celebration put on by the city of Ormond Beach is second to none in central Florida. Our residents and visitors alike have grown accustomed to a fun-filled family day ending with the best fireworks show right here in our beautiful downtown. Our City Commission voted unanimously on Tuesday, May 12, to postpone our fireworks celebration until Saturday, September 5, 2020.
This is Labor Day Weekend and we want our residents to be able to come out and celebrate when things are safer for everybody. This is not a decision that we took lightly. The safety of our residents was the driving factor behind my decision to postpone this celebration. We have many senior citizens as well as veterans that call Ormond Beach home and they deserve to be present when we celebrate both the Fourth of July and Labor Day in Ormond Beach!
Our residents deserve the best and safest celebration that we can give them. Ormond Beach residents understand these uncharted waters that we are in and I believe most agree that this decision is one that will keep our residents safer. I do not know about you, but I will still be celebrating our country’s birthday on the Fourth of July with my family in our backyard, with the American Flag flying, hot dogs on the grill and apple pie for dessert.
Stay safe Ormond Beach and Happy Birthday America!
