More upgrades to Cassen Park are in the works, as the City Commission unanimously approved a $47,000 work authorization for the design of a new bait house.
The plan is to remove the existing restrooms and bait house and construct a new combined building for the two uses, according to a city memo. A new covered pavilion will also be installed. The design phase is being funded via the city’s tax increment financing funds. The contract was awarded to Hall & Ogle Architects, Inc. Construction for the project is estimated to cost $865,000.
The city hopes that the improvements will create “a sense of place, opening/providing visual views, enhancing the walking experience, and providing access to the water,” according to the memo.
Mayor Bill Partington said he would like for the city to get input from the public, Bait Shop owner Ike Leary and Ormond MainStreet on the project, as well as take into consideration the comments from the past Downtown Steering Committee.
“I’d like to move forward as a community with the best plan in place and making sure we get that input is critical,” Partington said.
City Manager Joyce Shanahan told the commission to rest assured, as the city will cast a “wide net” in regards to public feedback for the project.
The Planning Board will review a zoning map amendment, development order and preliminary plat request for the upcoming Ormond Grande townhome project on Thursday, Oct. 8.
Project engineer Parker Mychenberg is seeking city approval to construct 60 townhomes off U.S. 1 near the Ormond Lakes subdivisions. Concerns from citizens include worsening the existing drainage issues for nearby residents.
The Planning Board will also review a zoning map amendment for a business park project on North U.S. 1 and a special exception for signage at the RaceTrac at 1670 W. Granada Blvd.
The City Commission also unanimously approved a request by a local U.S.1 business to annex into the city.
AA Truck and Tire Repair, whose property spans about 4.75 acres with a 5,400 square-foot building, sought voluntary annexation to connect to city utilities.

The gardens will remain open, OMAM said on its Facebook Page.
