Matanzas cross country teams competed in the annual Volusia/Flagler Freshman/Sophomore meet where the boys finished fourth overall and the girls placed sixth respectively. The team made the cross-county trip Saturday morning over to Spruce Creek High School, who typically hosts the championships.
On the boys side, leading the charge for the Pirates was Nicholas Hyatt, who finished 12th overall in a time of 19 minutes and 50.52 seconds. Following him was Zach Spooner (20:28.50), Josh Sepe (20:44.32), Logan Winfree (21.09.06) and Christian Norfolk (21:29.78) who rounded out the Pirates' top five scorers. The team finished with a score of 117 points and a team average time of 20:44.43.
For the girls, Sophia Wodchis was the first to cross the line for Matanzas. Wodchis finished 15th overall in a time of 22 minutes and 26.69 seconds. Following her was Carina Tavares (24:38.05), Chloe Irving (26:36.07), Cheyenne Hulsey (27.10.35) and Alyssa Lugo (29:17.49) who rounded out the Pirates' top five scorers. They finished with a score of 119 points and a team average time of 26:27.68.
Awards were given to individuals who finished in the top 20. Earning medals for the Pirates were Hyatt, Wodchis and Tavares.
Next up for the Pirates will be a short trip across town on Oct. 17 to compete in the annual Spikes and Spurs Classic hosted by Flagler Palm Coast.
