The Ormond Beach Backyard Highland Games were held at the Ormond Beach Masonic Lodge on Sept. 26, benefiting the Lodge's "Adopt a Teacher" program.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, many Celtic and Highland games had to be cancelled around the state. According to an email, Damon Sansom, maser of the Ormond Beach Masonic Lodge and Highland Games athlete, got together with other athletes from around the state and thus, the idea of the Ormond Beach
Backyard Highland Games was born.
The games included the well-known caber toss, hammer throw and stone throw. There were official Highland judges on hand and three world records were recored, according to the email.
The Lodge's "Adopt a Teacher" program gives one or more local elementary teachers financial help to supplement budget shortfalls in the classroom. The next event is planned for Dec. 12.
Artist Daniel Ambrose has donated a painting to Family Renew's Artist with a Heart of Gold art exhibit, which will be held at The Casements Nov. 12-21.
Ambrose, who works in oil and egg tempera, donated a coastal painting titled "Morning Whispers." Ambrose is a founding member of the American Tonalist
Society and a member of the American Society of Marine Artist, the press release states.
The exhibit will be Family Renew's second annual. The nonprofit helps provide housing and helps homeless parents to support their families in places of their own.
A Gold's Gym member raised over $1,000 for Halifax Urban Ministry at the gym's recent Epic Ride Event.
Kim Gray, 60, rode for 100 miles during the fundraiser, accomplishing the feat in just over four hours, according to an email. Her inspiration to hit the milestone solidified when one of her friends offered her $5 a mile. Gray was back at the gym the following Monday, just days after the Saturday, Sept. 26, event.
"Kim believes that you can do anything if you set your mind to it," the email states. "She did it and raised $1000 for Halifax Urban Ministry. Thanks Kim for your perseverance and your desire to help others. We love to see your smile when you walk into our facility."
The check was presented to HUM on Monday, Oct. 12, at Gold's in Daytona Beach.
Audubon Florida, the state branch of the National Audubon Society, will hold its annual assembly via Zoom this year due to the pandemic.
Because of this, registration isn't limited and the branch is able to offer an "Introduction to Audubon" session for free, according to an announcement. The subsequent workshops. which span one to two hours from Oct. 21 through Oct. 24, are available to registrants for $25. All segments have also been translated into Spanish.

Three local law enforcement officers were recognized by the Ormond Beach City Commission at the Oct. 6 meeting for saving a citizen's life.
Ormond Beach Police officers Jessica Fowler and Adam Griswold, along with Volusia County Sheriff's Office Deputy Christy Bourke-Sturrup checked in on the resident after receiving a call from a concerned family member on Sept. 21. The officers arrived in time to rescue the distressed resident and save their life.
