Road work is in full swing on Old Kings Road to widen portions of it from two lanes to four lanes.
This first phase of construction will widen Old Kings Road from Palm Coast Parkway north about 0.3 miles to Kings Way at the northernmost intersection and Old Kings Road south about 0.3 miles almost to Utility Drive.
This first phase is estimated to be completed in the summer of 2021.
Drivers may notice cones at the intersection, flagmen present, and a reduction in driving lanes.
Utility relocation, including the installation of light poles and trench work, continues.
The contractor has now begun the road widening effort beginning on the south side of the project. The contractor is expected to provide a schedule for road improvements, and the city will pass along any significant updates.
Traffic control through the project is designed to keep two lanes open — one each way — throughout construction. There may be some temporary lane shifts or closures on Old Kings Road. Other side roads could be closed for a brief time, but that has yet to be determined.
Future phases — two and three — of the Old Kings Road widening plans, with potential construction dates for 2025, will expand the road out to four lanes through Forest Grove Drive.
The goal is reduce traffic congestion for drivers using this main thoroughfare in Palm Coast. There will also be additional turn lanes added to empty traffic onto Palm Coast Parkway.
The city of Palm Coast appreciates the patience and cooperation of residents and motorists during this time.
