Sage Day is a champion.
She wrote a poem about women’s suffrage, and her third grade teacher, Mrs. West at Cypress Creek Elementary in Port Orange, entered her poem into the local contest sponsored by the Sugar Mill Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
The poem won the contest, then advanced to the state and won again. She then won the Southeastern Division, followed by the national contest. She was presented with a medal and is currently in fourth grade, taking her classes online, according to her mother, Chantel Day.
The poem is as follows:
100 years ago women were not
allowed to vote.
I know it’s hard to believe, but
this is not a joke.
In 1848, the Women’s Rights Movement
began.
Women were tired of being mistreated
so they started to plan.
In 1913 they marched in Washington, D.C.,
in the Women’s Suffrage Parade.
Thousands of women united for the
right to vote, proud and unafraid.
The right to vote was granted in 1920
because these strong women paved
the way.
Please honor their hard work and
courage by voting on Election Day.

To celebrate National Senior Citizens Day on Aug. 21, residents at Brookdale Port Orange were honored for their life contributions, including service in the military, vocations that helped their communities thrive, and raising sons and daughters who carried on the family traditions and made their parents proud. Each received a copy of the proclamation, and some shared the moment with family members who came for window visits.
The City of Holly Hill also issued a proclamation honoring the elders in their community.
In 1988 President Ronald Reagan proclaimed Aug. 21 National Senior Citizens Day. He said, “For all they have achieved throughout life and for all they continue to accomplish, we owe older citizens our thanks and a heartfelt salute.”
