The Seabreeze Sandcrabs’ softball team and the Mainland Buccaneers went cleat-to-cleat on the diamond for 10 innings, Thursday April 1, leaving Seabreeze with the only run on the scoreboard.
Mainland pitcher Bella Dejulio and the Buccaneer infield got the ball rolling top of the first inning with an out by Leah Coffing at first base, a strikeout and a pop fly caught by Dejulio. Seabreeze pitcher Julie Kelly responded with three strikeouts in the bottom of the first. Both pitchers continued their prowess throughout the game with Kelley pitching a shutout to include 19 strikeouts and allowing one hit. Dejulio had 15 strikeouts and allowed five hits while relief pitcher Coffing had three strikeouts, allowing one hit and one run.
“I can’t say enough good about our pitching staff, freshman Bella Dejulio and senior Leah Coffing,” Mainland head coach Kelsey Moscovits said. “They executed a great game and are the picture of mental toughness. The future is bright for Mainland softball and we can’t wait to keep improving.”
Sandcrabs’ team captain and catcher Ginna Mohr led the statistics board with three-for-five at bats consisting of two doubles, a triple and three stolen bases. Mohr sustained a leg injury from a foul tip midway through the game but rebounded with the lone run.
“I couldn’t be prouder of our girls,” Seabreeze head coach Jen Mollo said. “They all stepped up when we needed them to as a team, to win the game. Obviously, Julie pitched an amazing game, as per usual, but also at the end of the day, we have to get on base to score. I was so glad with all of captain Ginna Mohr’s hits and that she was the one that got to score that winning run.”
Mollo and her family appreciate baseball and are fans of the Chicago Cubs. It is tradition for the Cubs to fly an official Major League Baseball “W” flag after they win a game.
“I was born and raised with Cubbie Blue Blood and Thursday was (MLB) opening day, so we decided to make it a new tradition to fly the 'W' when we win,” said Mollo. “It was a totally fun game to win and even more fun that we beat our friendly rival twice. I also want to say congrats to Mainland for a game well played.”
The Buccaneers went on to win against Atlantic due to forfeiture Friday, April 2 and against New Smyrna Beach Monday, April 5, 12-2. Both teams lost their games Tuesday, April 6. The Sandcrabs lost to Matanzas 12-5, while Mainland lost to Geneva 9-3.
