Flagler Palm Coast and Mainland high schools will have to wait another week to open their football seasons.
Both teams were forced to postpone their Friday, Aug. 27 season openers because their opponents are facing COVID-19 issues.
FPC was to host Pine Ridge, and Mainland was scheduled to host DeLand. Coaches from both visiting teams tested positive for COVID and players and coaches who had close contact with them have been directed to quarantine under Volusia County school district protocols.
FPC and Mainland are both working to reschedule those games for later in the season. But now the two teams will have an extra week to prepare for their Sept. 3 showdown at FPC's Sal Campanella Stadium.
The game will mark the return of former FPC coach Travis Roland, who left the Bulldogs in June to take the head coaching job at Mainland, his alma mater. It will also mark the debut of FPC head coach Robert Paxia, who has also returned to his alma mater.
