Going back to school can be an expensive endeavor for parents. Flagler Schools held the “Back to School Jam” again this year at Flagler Palm Coast High School after not holding one since 2019. The Flagler County Education Foundation filled and handed out over 500 backpacks with school supplies. All the backpacks were handed out before the event ended at 1 pm. Bins of extra supplies were then given out until they were gone as well.
“The need in our community is great. With approximately 64% of our students on free/reduced lunch, we have seen an increase over the last 18 months in requests from our STUFF Bus Program,” says Joe Rizzo, Executive Director of the Flagler County Education Foundation. The STUFF (Supplying Things U Find Fundamental) Bus program has been helping students, staff, and families in Flagler Schools since 2010.
Two local businesses have been instrumental in the Flagler County Education Foundation to keep up with demand this year. Advent Health Palm Coast held a backpack drive with each department and was able to fill over 150 backpacks with school supplies in addition to extra boxes of supplies. Yellowstone Landscape also held a company-wide drive and donated over 100 backpacks filled with school supplies. Their drive was company-wide and included Yellowstone locations everywhere.
