The game was out of reach for Seabreeze. But the basket was not for Sandcrabs sophomore Jordan Calder.
Going into the fourth quarter Dec. 6 at Flagler Palm Coast High School, the Sandcrabs trailed 68-38 and sharpshooter Calder had been held to two points.
Calder decided to go down fighting.
“I told myself I need to start shooting some 3’s. That’s what I’m good at,” he said. “So, I started shooting.”
Calder hit three 3-point shots in the fourth quarter and finished with a team-high 11 points in Seabreeze’s 78-51 loss.
“It was harder to get open 3’s against their man defense,” Calder said. “I felt I had to create space for myself using jab steps and step-backs.”
Seabreeze fell to 0-4, but Calder feels like he is finding a groove. He also hit three 3-pointers and scored 13 points against Father Lopez on Dec. 2.
“I think we’re going to get it together,” Calder said. “I know my teammates feel if I’m open, I’m going to keep knocking them down, and as the season progresses, I feel like I’m going to get into a rhythm.”
FPC jumped out to a 20-9 lead in the first quarter and went up 42-17 at halftime.
The Bulldogs (2-3) hit 12 3-pointers, with Rya’sir Jefferson and Alex Aviles combining for nine from long range.
Jefferson scored 22 points with five 3-pointers. Aviles scored 20 points with four from behind the arc. Karl Knighten Jr. added 13 points for the Bulldogs.
“We’re trying to shoot the ball better,” FPC coach Derrick Williams said. “Tonight, we shot it well.”
The Sandcrabs host Spruce Creek on Thursday, Dec. 9, at 7:30 p.m. FPC visits Seabreeze on Monday, Dec. 13.
