The Seabreeze boys’ soccer team won an intense skirmish against the Gainesville Hurricanes, Tuesday, Feb. 9, at the Ormond Beach Soccer Complex. The boys finished the game 1-0 and joined their female counterparts, the Lady Sandcrabs, as District 4-5A champions.
Both the Sandcrabs and Hurricanes showed up on the championship pitch ready to play ball. Their season records, Seabreeze 11-2-2 and Gainesville 12-1-4, foretold the deadlock that would ensue the first half of the game. At halftime, the board remained scoreless.
Coach Jon Kinsler did not offer a pep talk during halftime.
"Honestly, the way you’re playing, they (Gainesville) should be winning," Kinsler said "They look better than you. You gotta get it together. Start playing."
Four minutes into the second half, the Sandcrabs’ team captain, Chance Shamlou, collided with the Hurricane’s goalie, William Clavier. The infraction was called on Clavier and Shamlou was given a penalty kick. He drilled the ball into the net, giving Seabreeze their one and only point for the game. Sandcrab goalie, Jake Feigenbaum, held the Hurricanes to zero with four saves.
The Seabreeze Sandcrabs finish the season with a 12-2-2 record as they head into the Class 5A state championship tournament, Wednesday, Feb. 17.
