As long as hurricanes don't get in the way, Flagler Schools students and teachers will get a full week off for Thanksgiving and spring break and two weeks off for winter break this coming school year.

The Flagler County School Board approved the academic calendar for the coming 2021-2022 school year at its meeting on Jan. 19.

The academic year will begin for teachers and staff with preplanning and professional learning days starting on Tuesday, Aug. 3, and end with a teacher work day on Thursday, June 2.

Students will start on Tuesday, Aug. 10, and end Wednesday, June 1.

Students and teachers will be on break from Monday, Nov. 22 to Friday, Nov. 26 over Thanksgiving, as long as hurricanes haven't eaten into class time by then: The first two days of the break are "potential hurricane make-up days" that could be converted into instructional time as needed.

Winter break will start Monday, Dec. 20, and continue through Friday, Dec. 31. As with the Thanksgiving break, the first two days of the winter break are potential hurricane make-up days.

Spring break will start Monday, March. 14 and continue through Friday, March 18. None of those days are potential hurricane make-up days.

In addition to three planning days and two professional learning days in the week before students return to school in August, teachers will have a teacher work day on Monday, Oct. 11 (also a potential hurricane make-up day), right after the end of the first quarter; a teacher work day on Monday, Jan. 3 and a professional learning day on Tuesday, Jan. 4 before the start of the second semester; a teacher work day on Friday, March 25, after the end of the third quarter; a professional learning day on April 15; and a teacher work day on Thursday, June 2, after the end of the second semester.

There will also be paid holidays for teachers and staff on Labor Day (Monday, Sept. 6), Martin Luther King Jr. Day (Monday, Jan . 17), Presidents' Day (Monday, Feb. 21), and Memorial Day (Monday, May 30).
