Positive test results for COVID-19 in Flagler County have risen from 34 cases a week six weeks ago to 34 a day last week to 56 a day this week, according to the health department.
"Yesterday alone, we had 98 cases," Florida Department of Health-Flagler Communications Manager Gretchen Smith said on Flagler Broadcasting's Free For All Friday radio program July 23. "It’s not going in the right direction: We’ve had over 300 cases this week alone, and there’s 35 people in the hospital right now with COVID.”
Bunnell City Commissioner John Rogers said he'd had COVID-19 for more than 30 days and had gone to the ER three times.
"It was just a battle," he said on the radio program. "The pain was unreal."
He said he'd made a mistake by not getting vaccinated and will do so once he's able.
"If I had to do it allover again, I would have been vaccinated," he said. "We’ve got this new variant, and it’s no joke.”
The numbers of positive cases do not include the positive results received from rapid tests that can be picked up at pharmacies and grocery stores, said Dr. Stephen Bickel, medical director for the Florida Department of Health-Flagler.
"Our case numbers may be way higher," he said. "It wouldn’t shock me if we’re getting 1,000 cases a week these days."
