The Lady Sandcrabs battled the Lady Buccaneers for a Seabreeze 2-0 win Thursday, Feb. 25 at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex.
Both teams brought their A-game to the diamond along with talented pitchers: Seabreeze freshman Julie Kelley and Mainland pitcher Leah Coffing. Throughout the game, Kelley and Coffing gave up four hits each and maintained comparable strikeout records of 17 in 7 innings pitched and 15 in 6 innings pitched, respectively.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the second inning when Sandcrab pitcher Kelley hit the ball in the outfield for a triple. Center fielder Shanaa Hewitt drove Kelley home for the run, wrapping up the inning with a 1-0 Seabreeze lead.
Even though the three innings that followed were scoreless, there was plenty of action. Mainland’s first baseman Bella Dejulio hit a single at the top of the third inning while outfielder Kaylee Peterson hit a double in the fourth. Seabreeze’s Kelley hit a double at the bottom of the same inning.
After an uneventful fifth inning, Seabreeze sealed the win in the sixth with a single by shortstop Samantha Vonn Hein that evolved to a run after pushed by third baseman Hannah Little's RBI.
Seabreeze’s head coach Jen Mollo was their assistant coach last year and is impressed with the team’s progress.
“When we started the season, I never thought we would be 4-0," Mollo said. "I really thought we were going to struggle this year and then all of these freshman and sophomores popped out of nowhere and started rocking it. This team, actually, this family, as we have become, is growing stronger and getting better by the minute. Attitude, teamwork, and morale are half the battle, and we get an A plus in that department. A great friend once taught me two of the most important things that are totally applying to us as team; 1. Relentless forward progress. 2. There are no coincidences.”
Mainland’s head coach and UCF alum, Kelsey Moscovits took over the program a few years ago and has dedicated her time to rebuilding the program. She is pleased with this group of girls who are currently 2-1 going into the season.
“I am very proud of the team and think we are going to keep getting better every day,” Moskovits said,
The Seabreeze Sandcrabs play Crescent City Raiders Monday, March 1, while the Mainland Buccaneers head to Deltona to play the Pine Ridge Panthers Tuesday, March 2 in non-district games.
