The Lady Pirates’ flag football team lost to the Lady Buccaneers 30-6 Monday, March 1, on Mainland High School’s gridiron.
Mainland charged the field, and, within 10 minutes of the first half, Alexa Wilson made a decision to forgo the pass and run the ball in herself. Attempts at extra points were thwarted by Matanzas’ Megan Torres, who deflected a pass by Isys Grady meant for Ava Dougherty in the end zone. The Lady Buccaneers followed up the loss of extra points with a touchdown by wide receiver Kassie Stoner about 10 minutes later.
The Lady Pirates rallied 30 minutes into the game when Alyssa Kimmel passed to Emily Demarteleire for a touchdown. Mainland answered with two additional touchdowns by Stoner.
Even though disappointed, Matanzas' head coach Tom Wooleyhan stayed positive.
"This game will not define our season,” Wooleyhan said. “Our goal was to go 1-0, and we did not get that done tonight. Our mindset has now shifted to FPC Thursday night. They (Mainland) were a well coached team. That is why year in and year out they are playing for district championships. We will get there. It is a long season.”
The Lady Pirates play the Lady Bulldogs on home turf Thursday, March 4, in a non-district game.
