The Seabreeze Sandcrabs’ boys’ baseball team squashed the St. Augustine Yellow Jackets with a 4-1 win on Tuesday, March 9 at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex.
Both teams were closely matched entering the game with Seabreeze’s record at 4-3 and St. Augustine’s standing at 3-3. Yellow Jackets were first up to bat and faced Sandcrab pitcher Trevor Presswood, who pitched for five innings, allowed four hits, one run and had five strike outs. Diego Rivera started it off by sending a fly ball into right field, caught by Julian Wood. St. Augustine remained scoreless as they headed into the bottom of the first inning. Seabreeze established an early lead after Zachary Sager doubled on a ground ball to right fielder Hayden Hurlong and scored following an error by the Yellow Jackets’ first baseman, Haden Steiger.
Bases were loaded in the bottom of the third inning as St. Augustine pitcher Luke Hayes walked Sandcrab Mason Boice, resulting in a run by Ethan Gilbert. Seabreeze was up 2-0 as they headed into the top of the fourth but Yellow Jacket Josh Burgess answered with a double to left field, a steal to third after a wild pitch and an inevitable first score by St. Augustine.
The Seabreeze Sandcrabs sealed the deal in the fifth and sixth innings with a triple by Sager on a fly ball to left field, forced in by Jonathan Kaney’s RBI and a run by Luke Dillman followed by his double to left field. Seabreeze’s 4-1 lead remained unanswered by St. Augustine in the top of the seventh inning and the Sandcrabs walked away with the win.
Seabreeze heads to Matanzas for a district game Friday, March 12 on a four game winning streak.
