George C. Grech
1933-2021
George Grech, formerly of Rockville Centre, passed away on October 23, 2021 at the age of 88 years after a brief illness.
The youngest child of Maltese immigrants, George was born and raised in Astoria, Queens, New York. George and his devoted wife Ellie made a home for their family in Rockville Centre, New York for 31 years and then retired to Palm Coast, Florida in 1994. George was active in the Flagler County Republican Club, St. Augustine/Palm Coast Council of the Navy League of the United States, the local VFW lodge, the Elks Club, and the Knights of Columbus.
George proudly served in the United States Navy during the Korean War. He was an Electrician’s Mate on the aircraft carrier USS Oriskany, his pride and joy. Upon his discharge from the US Navy, George started a 39-year career with the New York Telephone Company (Verizon). George was a devoted father to his two sons and was actively involved with Rockville Centre Little League teams, Boy Scout Troop 163, and organized numerous family camping excursions. He was a talented handyman and delighted in helping friends and neighbors with their “around the home” projects.
George is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 62 years, Ellie; sons Robert and his partner Kathy; Thomas and daughter-in-law Janet of Malverne; and two beloved grandchildren, Thomas II, and Ashley Rose; numerous nieces and nephews. He also was predeceased by his brother Joseph and his sister Maryanne.
