Flagler Beach restaurant Hang Ten closes permanently

The restaurant's former co-owner was arrested in July on charges of child molestation. The restaurant has since been the subject of local code-related complaints.

The Hang Ten restaurant — formerly Jimmy's Hang Ten — in Flagler Beach has closed, less than a year after it opened.

Co-owner James Harris had been arrested in July on charges of molesting a child. He is on jail with no bond awaiting trial, and faces up to life in prison if convicted.

His wife Jayne Harris, with whom he'd co-owned the restaurant at the northern corner of the intersection of State Road A1A and 12th Street South, took over as sole owner and changed the restaurant's name from Jimmy's Hang Ten to Hang Ten.

She announced in a post on the restaurant's Facebook page Nov. 1 that the restaurant is closing.

"It is with an extremely heavy and broken heart that I am writing this," she wrote. "Many of you know that the past four months have been extremely challenging for me and my staff at Hang Ten. I have been working tirelessly to overcome multiple challenges in running Hang Ten, but ultimately they proved to be insurmountable and I therefore have no option other than to close effective immediately."

The post went on to thank the restaurant's customers and staff.

The restaurant had recently drawn complaints from local residents and City Commission members.

At an Oct. 14 commission meeting, Commissioner Ken Bryan called the restaurant's reliance on portable bathrooms outside the building "absolutely unacceptable," while other residents said it played inappropriately loud music.

Commissioners had discussed how the restaurant might be cited by Code Enforcement staff for the portable bathrooms and the music.
