If Matanzas golfer Alexandra Gazzoli continues this pattern, she'll be a state champion next year.
The sophomore finished second at the Class 2A state girls golf championship Nov. 13. A year ago, she finished third.
Gazzoli was tied for fifth place after the first day. But she rallied with four birdies on Day 2 to shoot a 2-under-par 70 and move up the leaderboard at the Mission Inn Resort and Club in Howey-in-the-Hills.
She finished with a 74-70—144, three strokes behind state champ Sabree Lefebvre of Riverview Spoto, and two strokes ahead of third-place finisher Amelia Cobb of Seabreeze (73-73—146).
Mainland's Loa Johannsson finished seventh with a 73-78—151.
Cobb led Seabreeze to a fourth-place team finish with a score of 677, one stroke behind Archbishop McCarthy. Plantation American Heritage won the 2A championship with a score of 635.
Gazzoli and Johannsson qualified for state as individuals.
Flagler Palm Coast's Lucy Noble made the "B" final in one event and missed it by one spot in another at the Class 4A swimming championships Nov. 12 in Stuart.
Noble finished 13th overall in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.27 seconds. She missed the finals by one spot in the 100-yard freestyle, finishing 17th at 53.39 seconds.
FPC's Megan Hurley finished 18th overall in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:07.38. The Bulldogs' 200-yard freestyle relay team of Hurley, Michelle Marinez, Malaina Bryant and Noble was disqualified for an early takeoff.
