Starting in 2022, the Volusia County School Board will meet at 4:30 p.m. on the second and fourth Tuesday of every month, with public input beginning at 6 p.m.
It’s a decision made at the board’s organizational meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 16 — one the board thought would be fair for both district staff and the public, but teachers union Volusia United Educators disagreed, writing on its Facebook page that the decision is “another swipe at the teachers, stafff and members of the public.”
“How are working people supposed to attend meetings with this schedule?” the post reads. “VCS is disconnected!”
Currently, the School Board alternates between 3:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. meetings. Workshops will begin at 12:30 p.m. instead of 10 a.m.
Additionally, the board elected School Board member Ruben Colon as its new chair in a 4-1 vote; Jamie Haynes was re-elected as vice chair in a unanimous vote.
