About 200 people marched on the Granada Bridge in Ormond Beach on Saturday, Oct. 2, to rally for the right to abortions ahead of the reconvening of the U.S. Supreme Court on Oct. 4; justices will hear a case later this year that could overturn Roe v. Wade.
The local Women's March protest was one of hundreds held across the United States. It was organized by Daytona Beach resident Christina Quinn, who said she was spurred to action after the recent bill filed by State Rep. Webster Barnaby, R-Deltona, that aims to block abortion procedures should physicians discover a "detectable fetal heartbeat." Texas has recently passed a similar law.
Quinn said this rally isn't for her, but for the younger generation: Her niece is 12 years old, and Quinn doesn't want to see a world where her reproductive rights are being infringed upon.
The turnout surprised her; she was hoping for 50 people to show up.
“That really motivates me because if we don’t speak up, then nothing is ever going to stop," Quinn said. "They’ll just keep pushing on our rights as women, making us second-class citizens again.”
