“Pink-out” attire shrouded the stands on Seabreeze’s homecoming night as Daytona Stadium’s new scoreboard shined brightly on the gridiron. The energy was high but chemistry was key as the Sandcrabs defeated the Green Wave 34-0 on Oct. 8 to improve to 3-4.
Following last year’s exodus of 18 seniors from the roster, it has taken the Seabreeze coaching staff time to understand each players’ abilities during game time pressure as well as the team to gel on the field.
“We are a team getting better each week and understanding we cannot skip steps during the process if we want to be great.”
PAT BROWN, Seabreeze head coach.
“We are a team getting better each week and understanding we cannot skip steps during the process if we want to be great,” head coach Pat Brown said. “Our chemistry is getting stronger at the right time. We (wanted) to increase our efficiency on offense and get our running game established for the Lopez game.”
After a battle of punts in the first quarter, the defense scored the first Seabreeze touchdown. With Lopez punting from its own end zone, Eli Campbell blocked the kick and scooped up the loose ball in the end zone for the score.
“I was just doing what coach told me,” he said. “We saw it on film that their special teams weren’t the best so we took advantage of it. Coach said we were going to have at least one block.”
In Seabreeze’s first five games, freshman Khamani Robinson primarily played defense and was a starter in three. Two weeks ago, he proved to the coaches he was mentally ready to transition to offense. Robinson showed it was the right choice after he scored two touchdowns in only his second game on offense.
Adding to the touchdown total were quarterback Blake Boda, who passed for 104 yards, and wide receiver Peyton Schofield.
A few changes to the defensive lineup helped the 'Crabs sack Lopez’ quarterback Aiden Bourque four times with one each from Steven Taylor, Jeremy West and Dante Jones.
“Got me a sack out there,” Jones said. “Moving Jeremy on linebacker was a really good adjustment. We’ve also got defensive end (Jamari) Hicks as my sidekick and number 19 (Toma Pouncey) as nose tackle. Moving forward, going to play better and get more sacks.”
The Sandcrabs face Orlando’s Bishop Moore in their second district game of the season at home on Friday, Oct. 15.
