Sheriff Rick Staly had special instructions for the children who drove through the Flagler County Sheriff's Office's trunk or treat Oct. 16, at the Kim C. Hammond Justice Center.
Handing out sheriff's star stickers to children as as they entered the line of trunks, he asked, "Will you be one of my deputies?" He then told the children how to use their new authority. "If they don't start giving you candy up there, arrest them for me."
Students in the FCSO Explorer Program and Junior Police Academy helped hand out candy, alongside deputies, Citizen Observer Patrol volunteers, Police Athletic League and other FCSO employees.
"It brings people together," said School Resource Deputy Ralph Lilavois. "They get to see you out in the community, not just in your rear view mirror."
The event was hosted at the Justice Center for the first time, after previous years at Rymfire Elementary School. The FCSO also handed out candy to about 100 cars at another trunk or treat Oct. 15, at the Hidden Trails Community Center, in Bunnell.
