Dancing to the pregame music may not be a typical volleyball warmup drill, but it appears to be working for Seabreeze High School.
After losing their first four matches of the season, the Sandcrabs adopted a new strategy: Stay loose, play with high energy and have fun. The result: They won road matches on consecutive nights against St. Augustine and Flagler Palm Coast to improve to 2-4.
“We talked after the last loss (3-0 to Father Lopez on Aug. 31) and we said, ‘Let’s go out there and have a lot of energy and not worry about losing,’” coach Sara Swayze said.
They beat St. Augustine in four games on Sept. 1, and then swept FPC the next night, 25-16, 25-7 and 25-10.
“Our energy was high. We’re having more fun on the court with each other,” said senior outside hitter Skylar Martin, who leads the team in kills.
The Sandcrabs opened the season with a tough five-game loss at Pine Ridge, falling just two points short, 15-13, in the deciding game and then won just one game in their next three matches combined.
“We realized you can’t worry about everything,” said outside hitter Chloe Womack, who along with Martin led the Sandcrabs with eight kills against FPC. “It’s a game of mistakes. You’re going to mess up. You just have to push through it.
“We’re just playing the game that we love," she said. "So far that's working.”
