Ormond Beach Police Explorers receive $2,500 donation

On Monday, April 11, officers with The Fraternal Order of Eagles #4435 Ormond-by-the-Sea Ladies Auxiliary presented the Ormond Beach Police Explorers program with a $2,500 donation. 

The Eagles support multiple charities to assist local children and other organizations within the community, according to an email.

The Ormond Beach Police Explorers is a program that recruits teens between 14 and 18 who seek a potential career in law enforcement. The Police Explorers have been raising funds to help with state competitions, trainings, new uniforms and equipment. 

Learning on a walk

The Ormond Scenic Loop and Trail Corridor Management Organization held an educational trail walk at Bulow Creek State Park on Saturday, April 9, led by Dr. Don Spence, a plant pathologist and board-certified master arborist.

The walk began at the park's historic Fairchild Oak, and according to an email, hikers learned about the geologic history of the area, the  diverse plant and fungal species supportive by native Florida trees such as the live oak, as well as the current stresses on the historic tree and what remedies can be implemented. While on the trail, Spence also identified important native plant and tree species and taught hikers what they could do to build native habitats in their backyards.

He also spoke about the importance of engaging legislators and agencies to protect and preserve priority natural spaces, the email continues. 

Art Battle winner

An Ormond Beach artist won the inaugural Art Battle for this season, held April 9 during the Daytona Beach Art Fest, hosted by The River Arts District and Imagine Daytona.

Out of 12 local artists, Marianne Verna won the battle, which was composed of two 20-minute rounds during which artists were tasked with completing an original painting. 

"The excitement of the competition made for a wild afternoon," said Verna in a press release.

MOAS hosts Congressional Art Competition

The Museum of Arts and Sciences is the host location for this year's Congressional Art Competition, a press release recently announced. 

The competition, which began on Wednesday, April 13, features high school students nationwide and is sponsored by members of the U.S. House of Representatives.  Also known as the Artistic Discovery Contest, the competition was open to all high school students in Florida's 6th Congressional District, and the winning art will be displayed for one year in the U.S. Capitol. 

Winners will be announced at a ceremony at the museum at 4 p.m. April 20. The exhibition will remain on display through April 24. 

Lions hone in on education

The Ormond-by-the-Sea Lions Club members had education on the agenda for the months of March and April.

According to a press release, two lions were recognized after they graduated from the Regional Lions Leadership Institute in Fruitland Park, held March 25-27: Lion Jean Cerullo and Lion Kathleen Trutschel. They joined 25 other lions from across the district, The institute covered topics such as Lions fundamentals, time management, working in teams, public speaking, as well as setting and reaching club goals.

Past Council Chair Lion Greg Evans also graduated from the three-day Lions Faculty Development Institute in Shakopee, Minnesota, held April 8-10.
