A little unsteady

8:22 p.m. — 300 block of South Old Kings Road, Ormond Beach

Possession/use of narcotic paraphernalia. A police officer was flagged down by a citizen after a black Cadillac had crashed into a power pole.

When the officer arrived on the scene, he saw that the power pole was snapped in half, and spotted a 27-year-old Ormond Beach man standing outside the car, looking inside the passenger side door and speaking to the driver of the vehicle. The officer determined both were under the influence of narcotics or alcohol, according to the police report. The driver was arrested.

The Ormond Beach man was "very unsteady on his feet, had very slurred speech, and was totally incoherent," the report states, and the officer gave him several opportunities to call someone to pick him up. Because he didn't, the officer determined the man was too intoxicated to be released on his own or care for himself, and proceeded to take him into custody based on the Marchman Act.

During a search of his person, police found fentanyl inside a rolled $5 bill. He was taken to jail.

Making room

1:15 p.m. — 1500 block of West Granada Boulevard, Ormond Beach

Petit theft. Police responded to a local supermarket after a 36-year-old transient man was seen filling a cooler in his shopping cart with items before exiting the store without paying for the goods.

According to a police report, the man said he had his dogs in his shopping cart, and that it was filling up too much for them, leading him to place the items in the cooler to give them some room in the cart. He claimed his intention was to take the dogs out to "use the bathroom" before returning to pay for the items.

The officer asked him if pushing a cart outside the store with unpaid items seemed like a smart idea, and the man replied that it was his intention to pay for the items. He said he had about $70 in cash and some money in a debit card. The officer asked him why he would then fill up his cart with over $400 worth of items.

He was taken to jail.

Drunk at the beach

2:30 a.m. — 300 block of Cardinal Drive

Alcoholic beverage. An officer was entering the beach approach when he spotted a person sitting down at the restroom area. The officer noted that restrooms are locked at night and that the area was not open to the public, as it was connected to a lifeguard station.

He approached the 55-year-old Orlando man, who was sitting with his back against the wall and was awake, according to the police report. The man had both an open and unsealed bottle of vodka, told the officer that he had been there for about an hour, and that he was drunk. The man's zipper was undone and the officer noted that the man was exposing himself.

He was taken to jail.
