Learn about the science of light

When: 2 p.m.

Where: Ormond Beach Regional Library, 30 S. Beach St., Ormond Beach

Details: Staff from the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse and Museum will discuss the science of light. Topics will include technological advancements throughout history and how to harness and amplify light through refraction and reflection. Registration is not required. Programs are cosponsored by the Friends of the Ormond Beach Library. For more information, call 386-676-4191, ext. 4.

Public Art Turtle Trail unveiling

When: 10 a.m.

Where: Mala Campra Park, south parking lot, 115 Mala Campra Road, Palm Coast

Details: The Palm Coast Arts Foundation will unveil "Turtle no. 17" to the public. The turtle art piece was done by artist Chance Hancotte, who drew inspiration from Dr. Rampa and Mr. Mano Rattanarithikul, who contributed over 50 years to malaria research and entomology. The turtle was sponsored by the East Flagler Mosquito Control District. 

First Friday Garden Walk

When: 10-11 a.m.

Where: Washington Oaks Gardens State Park, 6400 N. Oceanshore Blvd., Palm Coast

Details: Come out the first Friday of the month to learn more about the gardens and history of Washington Oaks. No registration necessary; the walk is included with the park's entry fees. Meet at the garden parking lot at 10 a.m. and wear comfortable walking shoes. Tours last one hour.

Movies on the Halifax

When: 8:30-10:30 p.m.

Where: Rockefeller Gardens, 26 Riverside Drive, Ormond Beach

Details: Bring a chair or blanket and enjoy a showing of "Ratatouille," rated G. Movies are weather-sensitive. Call 386-676-3216 for rainout information.

Saturday, Aug. 6

First Saturday Creative Bazaar

When: 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Where: Palm Coast Arts Foundation, 1500 Central Ave., Palm Coast

Details: The Palm Coast Arts Foundation presents the First Saturday Creative Bazaar Arts and Crafts flea market. Visit palmcoastartsfoundation.com. 

Back to School Bash

When: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Where: Volusia Mall, 1700 W. International Speedway Blvd., Daytona Beach

Details: The Daytona International Speedway will host a Back to School Bash, featuring activities like a reptile petting zoo, face painting, Nerf Wars, a photo boot, meet and greets, performances and more. Fill the MRAP: School Supply Drive

When: 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Where: Walmart, 1521 W. Granada Blvd., Ormond Beach

Details: Help the Ormond Beach Police Department fill its military vehicle with school supplies for the community. Pictures and tours are welcome. School supply drive done in partnership with Walmart. Donations are also accepted anytime at the Police Department, located at 170 W. Granada Blvd.

Art walk

When: 5-8 p.m.

Where: Ormond Beach MainStreet Arts District, 128 W. Granada Blvd., Ormond Beach

Quilting Help and making fidget quilts

When: 9:30 a.m. to noon

Where: Ormond Beach Library, 30 S Beach St, Ormond Beach

Details: The Mother Hen group of the Racing Fingers Quilt Guild hosts a community outreach meeting on the second Thursday of the month. They welcome anyone who has quilting questions, wants information about the guild, wants to sit and sew with the group, or wants to make fidget quilts for donation to Alzheimer and dementia patients. Ormond Beach Area Democratic Club meeting

When: 6:30-8 p.m.

Where: 56 N. Halifax Drive, Ormond Beach

Details: The August meeting for the Ormond Beach Area Democratic Club will meet in-person and on Zoom, with social visiting beginning at 6:30 p.m. and the meeting at 7 p.m. The meeting's focus will be on getting ready for the primary election, including hearing from candidates and volunteer opportunities for early voting. Details: See this exhibition by the Colored Pencil Society of America District Chapter 117, of St. Augustine. The opening reception will take place from 1-3:30 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 7.

Art in Harmony

Details: This exhibition showcases new painting, sculptures and photographs by 12 regional and national contemporary artists, including several of whom who are local. 

Water|Ways

Where: African American Museum and Cultural Center of Florida, 4422 N. U.S. 1, Palm Coast

Details: The African American Museum and Cultural Center of Florida, in partnership with the Florida Humanities, presents, "Water|Ways," a traveling exhibition from the Smithsonian's Museum on Main Street program. Water|Ways explores the endless motion of the water cycle, water's effect on landscape, settlement and migration, and its impact on culture and spirituality.
