For the parishioners of Holy Dormition Byzantine Catholic Church in Ormond Beach, their Patronal Feast Day arrived one day early on the pre-feast for the Dormition, according to a press release. The parishioners celebrated with their annual "covered dish dinner," though this year the day celebration had a special meaning.
According to the press release, the Dormition, or falling asleep, of the Theotokos is celebrated each year on Aug. 15 throughout the Catholic and Orthodox Churches. And this year, on the day before the Patronal Feast, the parish community paid a special tribute to Deacon Timothy Kennedy and his wife, Angie. Kennedy has only been with the parish for seven months, having arrived shortly after the Christmas holidays. He is a permanent deacon for the Byzantine Eparchy of Passaic, New Jersey, and a retired detective from the New York City Police Department.
In the spring, Timothy was accepted as a candidate for the priesthood. He and his wife will move to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania for the upcoming school semester, where Kennedy will begin theological studies and priestly formation at the Byzantine Catholic Seminary of S. Cyril and Methodious.
Holy Dormition Church is served by Rev. Vincent Brady, associate pastor in residence, and Rev. Salvatore Pignato, Orlando administrator.
JD Motorsports announced a continued sponsorship of the No. 4 car with Habana Brisa, driven by Bayley Currey this week at the Daytona International Speedway.
The car pays tribute to Ron Rice, the "Suntan King," with a Habana Brisa decal on the lower quarter panel, according to a press release. Rice died May 19 at age 81.
More than 50 years ago, Rice — a former chemistry teacher, high school football coach and Daytona Beach lifeguard, founded Hawaiian Tropic by hand-mixing suncare formulas in a galvanized trash can. He grew it to become an $8 billion global brand, which he sold in 2007. His love of NASCAR dated back to the days when he sponsored the red No. 1 Hawaiian Tropic car driven by Donnie Allison.
“It’s an honor to carry his legacy on my car, he truly is a local legend in the Daytona area," said Currey in the press release. “Daytona is such a great track with such a rich history. I am really looking forward to this weekend."
The reef-friendly Habana Brisa brand is now owned and led by CEO Wendy Holly, a lifelong friend of Rice's.
“Anyone who met and knew Ron, their lives were enriched for the better," Holly said. "I’ve learned so much from him and I’m proud to carry the Habana Brisa brand forward in his honor. Ron was proud to be associated with Bayley Currey and Tony Priscaro of JD Motorsports and we're thrilled that Ron’s memory will be honored this week at Daytona International Speedway. It’s a triple win to be part of a great race team, with great people and a great driver — at the birthplace of racing — in Ron’s hometown.”
Every day, Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida distributes enough food for 250,000 meals, and according to a press release, it's not enough. Due to rising prices and a heightened demand for food assistance, the food bank is asking for the community's support to "Stock the Shelves" during the month of September for Hunger Action Month.
“The community continues to feel the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and with added pressures from rising inflation, the need for food assistance across Central Florida remains elevated,” said Derrick Chubbs, president and CEO. “We have challenged ourselves and the community to be part of the solution. Everyone can make a difference — whether that’s by donating, advocating, volunteering or educating yourself.”
