Halifax Humane Society staff "never turn away an animal regardless of breed, age, condition, or circumstance," stated a message from the shelter's Board of Directors on Friday, Dec. 2.

"Owner surrenders are at an all-time high," the message states.

To date in 2022, HHS states it has helped over 18,000 animals. The shelter has accepted 4,470 dogs and cats and has a 93.94% live release rate. A total of 3,408 animals have been adopted, 1,084 have been fostered, 472 reunited with their families and 5,998 spay or neuter surgeries have been performed.

"We invest significant resources into enrichment and behavior observations of animals, who due to no fault of their own, arrive to our doors with tragic histories," the message states. "Every reasonable effort is made to adopt out every animal in our care. However, there are those times where either because of medical or behavioral reasons an animal cannot or should not be adopted out. This is a difficult decision, and our protocols take into account the welfare of the animal and the safety of our team members, the person adopting the animal, and those who might also come in contact with it once it has been adopted out."
