Isabella Tietje and Tiana Fries won individual titles, and Matanzas won the team title at the Region 1 girls wrestling championships Feb. 19 in Panama City.
The Pirates will send six wrestlers to the first FHSAA girls state championships March 3-5 in Kissimmee. They’ll be joined by Flagler Palm Coast’s Ana Vilar, who finished fourth in the 125-pound weight class.
Matanzas topped district rival Ponte Vedra, 138.5 points to 105, to take home the team trophy. Mosley, from nearby Lynn Haven, finished third with 74.5 points.
Tietje won the 135-pound championship, avenging Jaidyn Vinson of Clay, who had pinned her in the district final a week earlier. At region, Tietje pinned all three of her opponents, including Vinson in 2:38 in the final.
Fries added a regional title to her district title at 110 pounds. The freshman recorded three pins and a major decision. In the final, she pinned Cynthia Kowtizki of Ponte Vedra in 1:51 to improve to 15-2 on the season.
Also qualifying for the state championships for Matanzas were Mariah Mills (third at 105 pounds); Christina Borgmann (fourth at 120 pounds); Saiomy Cabrera (fourth at 140 pounds) and Nahilha Lubin (fourth at 235 pounds).
