Coming of its first-ever head-to-head victory against all-time state power Spruce Creek, Flagler Palm Coast’s boys weightlifting team hosted a meet with Feb. 16 with three other heavy hitters including Creek.
This time the Bulldogs and the Hawks tied for second place with 53 points apiece, while reigning Class 1A state champ Keystone Heights ran away with first place, compiling 70 points. East River was third with 29 points, and Winter Springs finished fourth with 15 points.
Nick Lilavois, Domonique Bennett, Isaiah Rivers and Rigens Andre all won their weight classes for FPC. Bennett, who finished second in the 129-pound class last year at the Class 3A state championships, has moved up to 139. He lifted 255 pounds in the clean and jerk, the weight he missed at state last year. Bennett totaled 500 pounds, 40 pounds more than the second-place total.
Lilavois hit all six of his lifts and totaled 395 pounds to win the 129-pound class. Rivers benched 290 and totaled 520 to win the 154-pound class. Andre benched 350, the second best bench press of the day, and totaled 640 to win the 219-pound class.
Chris Doremy and Wood Registe finished second and third at 199 pounds with totals of 535 and 530, respectively. Thomas Desantoli was third at 238 pounds with a 585 total. Elijah Aylesworth was fourth at 169 pounds with a 495 total.
Meanwhile, Matanzas' boys weightlifting team is also on a roll. The Pirates defeated Tocoi Creek 56-31 on Feb. 16 to improve to 4-0 on the season.
Flagler Palm Coast and Matanzas boys lacrosse teams each split their first two games of the season. FPC dominated Sandalwood, 13-1, before losing a cloase match to Fleming Island, 10-9. The Bulldogs host Tallahassee Chiles at 1 p.m. Feb. 26.
The Pirates opened with a 6-5 win over St. Joseph, but shut out by Sandalwood 17-0. They play at Father Lopez on Feb. 25 and return home against Pedro Menendez on March 2.
The FPC and Matanzas girls teams each lost their openers. FPC, which fell to Ocala Forest on Feb. 15, hosted Gainesville Buchholz on Feb. 24 and travels to Menendez on March 1. Matanzas struggled in its home opener against Menendez, falling 17-1.
