Sidelines: Nine Seabreeze wrestlers qualify for regionals

Three Sandcrabs won district titles; high school baseball season begins.

Three Sandcrab wrestlers win district titles

Seabreeze finished second at the District 6-1A wrestling tournament Feb. 16 in Mount Dora, qualifying nine wrestlers for the regional in Palm Bay.

Three Sandcrabs won district championships: Freshman William Sites (16-10) at 106 pounds; sophomore Hayden Herndon (17-7) at 145 pounds; and junior Pedro Sierra Bonilla (27-7) at 220 pounds.

The Sandcrabs also had three runners-up in junior Wyatt Sites (22-11) at 126 pounds, senior Joseph Kent (27-8) at 132 pounds and junior Jackson Pruett (4-6) at 195 pounds.

Brogan Kelly (170 pounds), River Gray (113 pounds) and Aiden Hedge (152 pounds) all placed fourth.

Mount Dora won the eight-team district title with 205.5 points. Seabreeze held off third-place Orlando Bishop Moore, 156 to 149.5. 

Play ball

While the major leagues are in a lockout, baseball season has begun in Volusia County. Seabreeze lost its opener, 8-1, at Spruce Creek on Feb. 21. The Sandcrabs were back in action Feb. 23 in a home game against DeLand. They play at Father Lopez on March 1 and then host the Green Wave on March 3.

Father Lopez opens at Deltona on Thursday Feb. 24 and then plays it home opener the next day against Mount Dora Christian Academy. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.

Mainland, which gave up 12 runs in the third inning of 17-1 loss to Matanzas on Feb. 22, hosts Taylor on Thursday, Feb. 24 at 4:30 p.m.

Chandler takes first in 800

Seabreeze participated in the Flagler Pinnacle Preseason Classic track and field meet at Flagler Palm Coast. Ella Chandler had a solid day, winning the girls 800 with a time of 2:20.44 and finishing second in the 600 in 1:43.39.

Here are some other top performances for the Sandcrabs: Boys 300 hurdles, Grant Scrabis, 42.81; boys 200, Tristan Taylor, 23.82; girls 200, Jayla Clowers-Jones, 28.94; boys 4x400 relay, Taylor, Olsen Crawford, Oliver Isaac, Chris Lewis, 44.29.
