Surrounded by picnic tables in Ormond-by-the-Sea, as cars drive by the ocean and neighbors take late-morning strolls, you will find a man dedicated to serving his country, and scooping ice cream.
“I want parents to feel comfortable giving their child a $5 bill, and allowing them to come to my ice cream shop and know that their child will be safe.”
-- Josh Scammell
Josh Scammell and his family opened Surfin’ Scoops on Oct. 1, 2021, in a little yellow building at 1760 Ocean Shore Blvd. He thought it would be a process to gain popularity.
“I thought I would ease into it,” Scammell said. “I never expected it to be so crazy.”
Prior to opening Surfin’ Scoops, the family also had another ice cream shop in the Outer Banks, in North Carolina. The family hopes to expand the business in five years.
Scammell went on to say his main goal for the business is to be “family friendly.”
“I want parents to feel comfortable giving their child a $5 bill, and allowing them to come to my ice cream shop and know that their child will be safe,” Scammell said.
The family achieves this goal by including a miniature golf course, cleanliness, and kid friendly activities on the weekends. Surfin’ Scoops plans weekly giveaways in the summer, and opportunities for local bands to play.
“It's a great community, one of the best communities I've ever experienced. Love the people, and the people who support me,” Scammell said.
When Scammell is out of town, serving as a reserve, his parents tend the shop.
Surfin’ Scoops hours are 11 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m.-9 p.m. weekends.
Any on-call first responder, such as firefighter, police officer, or medical personnel, get their ice cream free when stopping by. Military — both veterans and active duty — get a discount.
