Matanzas weightlifters Karissa Jackson and Andie Tice were both runners-up in their weight classes at the Region 2-2A meet last week, and both will be competing at the Class 2A girls weightlifting state championships Feb. 11 at Port St. Joe High School.
Jackson qualified to compete in both the traditional bench press/clean and jerk event and the new snatch event in the 139-pound weight class. She broke her own school records with a 170-pound bench and a 310-pound total. She lifted 140 in the clean and jerk.
Jackson also finished second at region in the snatch event with a 100-pound lift.
Tice had a 140 bench and a 140 clean and jerk for 280 total to finish second in the 129-pound class. She benched 140 on her first attempt but missed 150 on her next two tries.
Matanzas competed at St. Augustine High in the regional, which was split into two sites with two districts competing at each site on different days. Results were not released until both competitions were completed.
Four other Matanzas lifters finished among the top 10 in their weight classes but did qualify for state. In the traditional event, Kenna Peck was seventh in the 169-pound class, Tabatha Salcedo was eighth in 183 pounds, Morgan Matthews was ninth in 199 pounds and Maria Kelly was 10th in 154 pounds. Sarah Sanchez was seventh in snatch in 154 pounds.
