Flagler Palm Coast and Seabreeze each won a state team championship in the 2021-22 school year, and both schools performed well in the Florida High School Athletic Association's annual Floyd E. Lay Sunshine Cup All-Sports Awards.
Flagler Palm Coast finished 15th overall and sixth in boys sports in the Class 7A standings. Seabreeze finished seventh in girls sports in the Class 5A standings.
"I want to credit our great coaching staff," said FPC athletic director Steve DeAugustino. "They're teachers first and coaches second. They have two jobs and both take great effort. Let's face it, it hasn't been easy the last three years, and they're excelling. They represent Flagler Palm Coast in a great way."
FPC's boys program totaled 49 points in the all-sports standings with the weightlifting team finishing among the top three in two state competitions. Coach Duane Hagstrom's squad won the Class 3A state championship in traditional lifts and finished third in the state in the snatch competition.
Zach Sanford's FPC wrestling team finished fourth in the state and made the state semifinals for the first time in the dual competition.
Seabreeze's girls bowling team won the state championship, while the Sandcrabs' girls golf team placed fourth in the state in Class 2A and the girls cross country team placed 10th in the state in Class 3A.
Other top scoring teams in the standings were FPC girls bowling (third in the state), FPC girls weightlifting (tied for fourth and fifth in snatch) and Matanzas girls wrestling (third in the state).
Mainland High graduate Jonathan Campbell is the first recipient of the $1,000 senior scholarship award presented by the Ormond Beach Youth Football Cheerleading Association and the Ormond Beach Friends of Recreation. Campbell, who will play football for North Carolina A&T this season, is a former Ormond Beach Sandcrab Pop Warner player.
FPC's Vijay Weeden and Jadon Hampton signed cross country/track and field scholarships with Thomas University, while FPC's Schmidt Joseph will play soccer at Georgia Military College.
