The Daytona Beach Police Department released updates last week on investigations into two recent crimes. The first took place just one week ago.

Aaron Moten, a 16-year-old Daytona Beach resident, wanted for stabbing a teen with a knife, died while being taken into custody.

On May 24, several Daytona Beach Police Officers were sent to an address on Imperial Drive in response to a stabbing call. When they arrived at the scene a 17-year-old female was found outside of the home with multiple stab wounds to her legs, arms, and head. She was taken to Halifax Health Medical Center by paramedics, where she is currently in a stable condition.

“They definitely were acquaintances,” Police Chief Jakari Young said. “We got very little information as far as the motive.”

A K-9 team tracked Moten, who was found face down in the backyard of a house on Continental Drive. Moten was taken into custody and became unresponsive shortly after. He was revived by paramedics before being taken to Halifax Health Medical Center.

On Wednesday morning, he died en route to Arnold Palmer Hospital in Orlando.

“From our initial contact with him … he appeared to be under the influence of some form of substance just based on our interaction with him,” Young said.

The Orange County Medical Examiner’s office will perform an autopsy on Moten’s body to determine the cause of death.

Young says his officers took all the precautions necessary to get Moten into custody without force. While there is body camera footage, the chief won’t release the video while the investigation is still ongoing. Young asked the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to review it as well.

Before the stabbing, Moten was actively listed as a missing juvenile and had an active arrest warrant on charges of battery and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Another ongoing investigation is a fatal hit and run crash that happened in March at the intersection of Mason Avenue and Derbyshire Road.

On the night of March 3, Alfred Fleming was crossing Mason on foot heading north when he was hit and killed by a dark-colored sedan heading west on Mason.

Police Chief Jakari Young brought Beatrice Pride, Fleming’s stepdaughter, to a press conference in hopes of generating new leads to help solve this incident.

“If anybody have anything and have heard anything, would you please come and let us know and let Daytona Beach Police Department know because we could have closure for family, that's all I'm asking, and my mother is taking it real hard,” Pride said.

Pride said Fleming was very intelligent and a hard worker who will be deeply missed. The last time she saw her stepdad was the morning of the incident when she took him to the bank.

An officer who was near the scene and went to assist Fleming, witnessed the alleged vehicle stop briefly at the intersection of Mason Avenue and Lewis Drive before driving off. While the Daytona Beach Police Department also has a video of the fatal crash, it is very grainy, and the vehicle is hard to make out.

“We've gone dry on leads,” said Young “The purpose here is for anybody with a conscience that might have any information on this case to please come forward. Please come forward and provide the family the closure that they're looking for.”

Anyone who has any information should contact Officer Ashley Rossi at 386-671-5366 or [email protected].
