New Flagler Palm Coast baseball coach Kyle Marsh has had the opportunity to see how two of the greatest high school baseball coaches in area history operate.
Marsh played at Spruce Creek High School for Johnny Goodrich, who won 347 games in 20 seasons with the Hawks. Last season, he was an assistant at FPC for Anthony Campanella, who won 456 games in 29 seasons with Seabreeze and FPC.
Marsh was named the Bulldogs' head coach less than three weeks after Campanella announced his retirement.
As a player, Marsh had one of the best seasons as a pitcher in Volusia County history. He compiled an 11-0 record with a 0.35 ERA as a sophomore in 2012 in leading the Hawks to their only state championship.
Marsh threw a perfect game against Sanford Seminole in the district semifinals and then tossed a 1-0 no-hitter against FPC in the regional quarterfinals a week later.
But he shattered his right kneecap playing pickup basketball as a junior and transformed into more of a hitter than a pitcher in college. He played two seasons each at UCF and Embry-Riddle, batting over .300 throughout his college career.
While still at Embry-Riddle, Marsh founded travel team Florida Extreme Baseball. He also coaches with the Orlando Scorpions baseball club, where Goodrich is the general manager and Campanella is a head coach.
EMMA WOOD RUNNER-UP
Matanzas' Emma Wood was the runner-up in the voting for the Florida Dairy Farmers Class 4A Softball Player of the Year. Deltona junior pitcher Katie McCaw won the award with 97 points in voting by coaches and media. Wood compiled 37 points.
Wood, who will play softball at Embry-Riddle next season, batted .647 with 17 extra-base hits this season. She also had a 6-4 record and 2.41 ERA in the circle.
WRESTLER WINS AWARD
Former FPC wrestler Michael DeAugustino won the prestigious N-Club Performance Award at Northwestern University's graduation ceremonies last weekend.
DeAugustino was one of two Northwestern male athletes to be presented with the award in recognition of spectacular and outstanding athletic performance by a graduating senior.
DeAugustino is a two-time college All-American wrestler. He overcame a hand injury this season to finish fourth at the NCAA championships in the 125-pound class. He is expected to return next year for a fifth season.
MATANZAS FOOTBALL CAMP
The Pirates Take Everything Kids Football Camp for kindergarteners through sixth graders will run July 18-21, 9 a.m. to noon each day at Matanzas High. Campers will learn new skills, participate in no-contact drills and play ball with Matanzas High School coaches.
