The Southeast Volusia Flagler Family YMCA has received sponsorships for 15 students in kindergarten to fifth grade to learn how to swim this summer. The sponsorships were donated by The Great Opportunity Scholarship. Most of the 15 kids will be students from Southeast Volusia area schools, with some of them coming from the Babe James Community Center, located in the Historic Westside neighborhood of New Smyrna Beach.
“The YMCA never turns anyone away for the inability to pay for our programs,” said Katie Lyle, Chief Operating Officer, Volusia Flagler Family YMCA. “Organizations like The Great Opportunity Scholarship make that possible.”
The Great Opportunity Scholarship is a nonprofit entity which provides funds to support worthy community education efforts.
“Water safety education is one of The Great Opportunity Scholarship’s goals, so we are delighted to provide funds for these 15 children to benefit from the Y’s swim program,” said Kaye Walker, vice president of Great Opportunity Scholarship and SEV Family YMCA board member.
Volunteers at GOS are currently assisting in reading and writing programs at the Babe James Community Center and are stocking a free Lending Library on their property. They also place and stock free Lending Libraries at Chisholm’s Head Start Program and the New Smyrna Boys and Girls Club.
The Southeast Volusia Flagler Family YMCA is located at 148 W, Turgot Ave., Edgewater. They are open 24/7. For more information, including donating to the Y, call 386-409-9622, or visit https://vfymca.org/.
