Seabreeze rising senior Sam "Sosa" Gonzalez was quarterback Blake Boda's backup last season. Gonzalez is slated to play wide receiver this fall, and Boda's recent announcement that he is transferring to Cocoa High won't change that.
"We might have a package (for Gonzalez) at quarterback," said Seabreeze coach Pat Brown. "But we still want to move him around at the receiver position. He's probably the best athlete on the team."
Boda passed for 2,021 yards and 18 touchdowns with four interceptions for the Sandcrabs last year. At Cocoa, he replaces Davin Wydner, who passed for 3,529 yards in leading the Tigers to the Class 4A championship game. Boda, like Wydner before him, will play just one season for the Tigers.
Brown said the rising senior's transfer did not surprise the Seabreeze coaching staff.
"It wasn't shocking to me. We sat down with Blake," Brown said. "I always tell kids, if they feel like a situation is better for them, there's no problem, no ill-will. I hope it works out for him."
Brown said there will be an open competition for the quarterback spot with rising sophomore Hayden Hayes, Boda's projected backup, showing the most promise in spring.
