The city of Palm Coast and the Portuguese American Cultural Center hosted a public Portugal Day flag-raising ceremony at Palm Coast City Hall at 6 p.m. on Friday, June 10.
Due to the probability of bad weather, the ceremony was held inside.
Speakers included Palm Coast Mayor David Alfin, Vice Mayor Eddie Branquinho and Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly. The flags of the United States and Portugal were raised in celebration.
In attendance were Portuguese American Cultural Center Vice President Nelson Tereso, Portuguese consulate in Palm Coast representative João Queimado, and Counselor for the Portuguese Communities Manuel Viegas.
The festivities continued on June 11 and June 12 at the Portuguese American Cultural Center, with the local folklore group Rancho Corações de Portugal dancing, with traditional food and music.
Portugal Day is Portugal's official national holiday, and commemorates the death of poet Luis de Camões on June 10, 1580.
It is observed with ceremonies, concerts, pageants, games and parades in Portugal and by Portuguese citizens and emigrants throughout the world.
