The African American Cultural Society presented its annual scholarship awards to Matanzas High School graduates Sofia Curtain and Demetrius Headley and Flagler Palm Coast graduate Samira Taite-Headspeth.
They each won a $2,000 scholarship. Taite-Headspeth also won the $1,000 Dr. Madalin Price scholarship.
Each of the scholarship candidates participated in the AACS Youth Black History Program for two or more years, had two letters of reference and wrote essays describing how the scholarships would benefit their education and career goals.
Curtain is enrolled in the summer B session at Florida A&M University and was unable to attend the scholarship presentation at the AACS Cultural Center on June 25. She plans to major in biology with her ultimate goal of obtaining a medical degree and becoming pediatrician.
Headley will run track and major in exercise science at Keiser University in West Palm Beach. He plans to eventually earn a master's degree in sports management.
Taite-Headspeth plans to attend Daytona State College to earn a bachelor's degree in elementary education with a minor in psychology. Her goal is to become an applied behavioral analyst and help children with behavioral issues.
Jeanette Wheeler began the Youth Black History Program 19 years ago. In that time, the Youth Black History Committee has raised over $100,000 for college scholarships. Over the years, the scholarship winners have gone on to become attorneys, doctors, engineers and computer scientists, Wheeler announced at the presentation.
