6:45 a.m. 1700 block of East Moody Boulevard
Criminal mischief. A government worker arrived at work and found that a car alarm was sounding on one of the work trucks in the vehicle yard, and the truck's passenger side window had been smashed.
There were rocks on the ground around the truck. But nothing had been stolen, and it looked like whoever had broken into the truck hadn't rifled through it.
A deputy got surveillance footage.
It showed four children playing on the equipment in the vehicle yard. They started chucking rocks at the window of the truck, then, when that didn't work, hit it with a rake until it broke.
The kids scattered when the alarm sounded. Deputies identified all four as local elementary school children.
The government body that owns the truck decided not to press charges as long as the parents paid for the damage, which was about $1,000.
7:53 a.m. 1700 block of East Moody Boulevard
Grand theft of a motor vehicle, burglary of a vehicle. A woman who works at a local government office arrived at home and couldn't find her keys, and decided to leave her car unlocked overnight, since she felt that the neighborhood was safe.
But when she got up the next morning, it was clear that someone had taken the car on a joyride: It was parked in a slightly different spot, and there were mud splashes on it.
When she opened a door, the interior smelled of marijuana, the seat and headrest had been adjusted, the air conditioning was on full blast, the radio channel had been changed and the full tank of gas she'd left it with had been reduced to a quarter tank.
Nothing appeared to have been taken from her purse, which had been in the car overnight. Deputies are investigating.
