Marco Rubio

Dear Editor:

I want to express my support for the re-election of Sen. Marco Rubio.

He has done a commendable job as chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee (now vice chair and ranking committee member), but more so, when he was chairman of the Senate Small Business Committee. Why is that important?

In 2020 when COVID-19 hit, the economy hit rock bottom. Small businesses, homegrown brick-and-mortars did not know from one day to the next if they were going to keep their doors open. Then came along the Paycheck Protection Program which was primarily authored by Sen. Rubio after hearing directly from our small business community. Had this program not been in effect, a lot of people would’ve lost their jobs and businesses would have closed their doors.

When Congress passed the 2017 Tax Cut Act, Rubio made sure a child care tax credit for working families was included, something that will benefit young “paycheck to paycheck” families.

In addition, he’s been a champion for veterans, Everglades restoration and law enforcement.

In a time where leadership is rare, it’s important we re-elect Florida’s senior senator, Marco Rubio.

Safety for Pineland Trail

Dear Editor:

I would like to invite Susan Persis as city commissioner after speaking in front of her on March 1, and her husband Carl Persis as school board member to view and evaluate the condition of Pineland Trail, as referenced in the March 10 Observer article and March 17 letters to the editor.

Thanks to the Observer, city employees were seen on March 18 putting some red sand/dirt into some areas; only for it to wash down into the ditches and create more blockage of drainage for our properties.

What about the 8 to 10 inch drop-off areas on the road's edge if a vehicle was in need of using the shoulder? I feel the school buses should not be made to travel such an unsafe road, putting children's lives at risk. Do parents of the children on these buses realize how bad this road is?

On Dec. 10, 2021, a vehicle rolled over, and on March 6, a death of a motorcycle rider. Both happened on Pineland Trail — lost control! A dangerous road!

Editor's note: According to Florida Highway Patrol, the deceased 25-year-old motorcycle rider was driving northbound on Pineland Trail when, while performing a wheelie, his tail light struck the pavement and he lost control. He was ejected and died at the hospital.

Standing up against bullies

Dear Editor:

“Disney vs. DeSantis.”

That was the title of a recent article in CNN Politics. Our governor is a disgrace to human rights. The commonly known “Don’t Say Gay” bill, an extremely hot topic, is putting religion back into our schools, where it doesn’t belong. What happened to the separation of church and state (don’t even get me started on the abortion bill)?

What happened to supporting our children? When there’s a bully in the “big house," certain people are afraid, but I’m not. I’ve been standing up against bullies since I was 9 years old; at least that’s the first time I remember the experience and that was a racial thing, but to me, it’s just as nasty. My life may have been tough in many ways; however, I’m not gay, so that part has been easy, but much of it hasn’t been.

I can’t imagine what the LBGTQ community must go through, and I can’t imagine what it is like for people of color, either. I grew up in the 1960s and 1970s and I was taught to love my neighbors. Period. No matter their color or religion or sexual preference! We are all God’s children! Where is a real Christian when you need one? I’m so glad that Disney has stood up to DeSantis and I truly hope they no longer donate another nickel to the GOP in this God-awful state of Flori-duh.
